Aterciopelados among acts on roster.

Tomás Cookman, president of artist management/promotion firm Cookman International, is expanding his company's reach with the launch of Nacional Records. The newly created label, based out of Cookman's Los Angeles offices, will be officially unveiled during the Latin Alternative Music Conference, which runs Aug. 11-14 in Los Angeles.

Nacional already has four acts on its roster, including acclaimed Colombian duo Aterciopelados, who used to be signed to BMG. Nacional has also signed Aterciopelados members Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago as solo acts, as well as the Nortec Collective.

Cookman says distribution for Nacional is currently being negotiated with a major distributor.

The first Nacional release will be Echeverri's self-titled solo debut, which has already been released in Colombia by Sonolux, Nacional's partner in that country. Other partners include Pop Art Records in Argentina. In the United States, "Andrea Echeverri" is expected in mid-September.

"Any time there is a moment of consolidation and change, there are always opportunities for entrepreneurs and new independent companies; in this case, labels," says Cookman, explaining why he launched Nacional at this point in time. "Also, it just happened that two acts
[Aterciopelados and Nortec Collective] were free at the same time, and that made my decision a lot easier."

Cookman, who co-founded the LAMC, manages Paulina Rubio and La Ley, among other acts.
