"Shrek 2" will hit home video Nov. 5, it was announced today (Aug. 5) by DreamWorks Home Entertainment. The title will be available on VHS ($15.95) and DVD ($19.95). It is not known if the DVD version will be a multi-disc set or what kinds of extra features will be included.

"Shrek 2" is being released on a Friday instead of the traditional Tuesday street date, in a sales strategy that is sometimes employed for high-profile releases -- similar to the studio strategy of opening a new film on a Wednesday instead of a Friday to generate advance buzz. DreamWorks, which also released the original "Shrek" on a Friday, is considered one of the pioneers of the strategy.

The animated "Shrek 2" -- featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy -- is the top box-office performer of the year, with U.S. earnings of more than $430 million, according to DreamWorks.

The original "Shrek," released on video in November 2001, has sold more than 42 million combined units worldwide. At the time of its release, it held the record for top-selling video of all time, with first-week sales of 9 million combined units. (The current record-holder is Disney/Pixar's "Finding Nemo," which moved 17 million its first week.) "Shrek" was also the top-selling DVD in history by the end of 2001, selling 5.5 million DVD units in its first month on sale, according to DreamWorks.

"Shrek 2" is expected to be a huge seller in the fourth quarter. Other top titles are expected to be "The Passion of the Christ" (due Aug. 31 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment), "Spider-Man 2" (release date TBD, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment), "Star Wars Trilogy" (Sept. 21, Fox) and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (Nov. 23, Warner Home Video).
