Shanghai-based wireless service provider Linktone Ltd. says it had signed a "strategic alliance agreement" with Avex Inc., one of Japan's leading independent record companies. According to a Linktone statement, Avex will provide content for ringback services, ringtones, interactive voice responses and digital images of artists to the estimated 6.9 million China Mobile and China Unicom cell phone subscribers.

"We are very pleased to form this strategic alliance with Avex and offer a comprehensive suite of wireless entertainment services to our young Chinese customers, who are increasingly influenced by Japanese pop culture," comments Linktone CEO Raymond Yang.

Linktone also announced it will also build the official WAP site for Avex China, through which mobile subscribers will be enabled to download news, music and other content. Japanese pop is especially popular in Shanghai and Guandong provinces in southern China. An Avex spokesperson declined to comment on the deal.
