Retailer Trans World Entertainment posted increased sales in the second quarter of fiscal 2004, according to the company's latest financial results, released today (Aug. 12).

Retailer Trans World Entertainment posted increased sales in the second quarter of fiscal 2004, according to the company's latest financial results, released today (Aug. 12).

Total sales for the quarter ended July 31 were $277.2 million, a 12% rise from the sales totals for the corresponding period in 2003. Comparable store sales increased 3%.

Net income was $9.3 million, or 25 cents per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $2.9 million in the second quarter last year. The 2004 second-quarter income number also includes an income tax benefit of $10.5 million and an extraordinary gain of $2.2 million stemming from the company's acquisition of Wherehouse Entertainment Stores last year.

TWE operates 850 stores in the United States and its territories.
