The European Commission said Monday that it had extended until August 25 a deadline for its review of a planned joint venture between U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp and Time Warner Inc.

The joint venture would allow Microsoft and Time Warner, the world's largest media company, to jointly control ContentGuard Holdings, a digital rights management company.

The previous deadline for a decision on the planned merger was August 16. The Commission did not comment on the reasons behind the delay.
