Former Rhino Records senior VP of A&R Gary Stewart has been named chief musical officer for Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Computer, according to sources.

In his newly created role, effective Sept. 7, Stewart will oversee music content on Apple's iTunes Music Store. He will report to Apple VP of applications Eddie Cue. Stewart, who lives in Los Angeles, will at least initially commute to Apple's corporate offices.

Stewart, who oversaw countless reissue projects at Rhino, exited the label in December 2002 and has since run a consulting company.

An Apple spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment.
