Universal Music Japan says that on Sept. 8, it shipped 1 million copies of Utada's "Exodus," the singer/songwriter's long-awaited debut album for Island Records U.S. It is the largest-ever one-day shipment for an English-language album in Japan, topping the previous record of 500,000 units set by Mariah Carey when she was signed to Sony Music.

"Exodus," which the label says received first-day re-orders of 100,000 units, is expected to debut at No. 1 on the Japanese charts on Monday (Sept. 13). The album will be released in the States Oct. 5.

The album, a mix of alternative rock, melodic pop and dance grooves, features collaborations with Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore and producer Timbaland.
