Italian singer Giuni Russo died Monday (Sept. 13) after a long illness. She was 53.

Russo, who was born in Palermo, Sicily, had been part of the national music scene since the 1970s. A performer at the Sanremo Festival, she won the country's Festivalbar contest in 1982 with the song "Un Estate Al Mare" (A Summer by the Sea). She recorded multiple albums for Columbia.

Her funeral will be held tomorrow (Sept. 15) at the Monastero delle Carmelitane Scalze in Via Marcantonio Colonna in Milan.
