As expected, Koch Entertainment Distribution has made some staff changes, apparently in anticipation of Epitaph Records' shift to Alternative Distribution Alliance beginning in October.

On Friday (Sept. 17), Koch Distribution let go six employees, split evenly between marketing and information technology. The cuts included director of field marketing Dawn Roberts and VP of information technology Vincent Luciani.

Roberts had been hired earlier in April to create a field marketing staff of about 12 part-time, freelance workers, sources say. In leaving the company, Roberts is setting up New York-based Envision Marketing, and will retain her staff to offer those services to Koch Distribution as well as to other independent labels. Roberts was unavailable for comment.

Michael Koch, president of parent Koch Entertainment, says the company maintains a marketing and sales staff of more than 50 employees and that the overall company staff count has grown this year on a net basis, even considering this group of layoffs and an earlier smaller staff cut.

While some sources say Koch Distribution created the Roberts-led field marketing initiative as an inducement to retain Epitaph, Koch says it was an experiment and that after the test phase, the company decided to return to letting its labels outsource the function.
