A No. 1 hit for Johnny Cash in 1963, "Ring of Fire" is taking on new life as a stage musical celebrating Cash's life and music. The show is in development for a U.S. national tour to get under way next fall, with the ultimate aim of landing on Broadway in 2006. Auditions are being held in New York this week and in Nashville in early October.

"Ring of Fire" features more than 40 of Johnny and June Carter Cash's songs, including the title song, which was written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. Johnny and June's son, John Carter Cash, is the show's musical director.

The show is being produced by Bill Meade and Phoenix Productions, who were given the theatrical rights to Cash's life story and his musical catalog by his family. "Ring of Fire" will be directed by Tony Award winner Richard Maltby Jr.
