As expected, Sylvia Rhone has joined Universal Music Group as president of Motown Records and executive VP of Universal Records. Rhone, the former chairman/CEO of Elektra Entertainment Group, will report to Mel Lewinter, chairman/CEO of Universal Motown Records Group, and Doug Morris, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Group.
As the head of Motown, New York-based Rhone will be working with a roster that includes Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, India.Arie, Brian McKnight and Michael McDonald. The latter's second Motown covers album, "Motown 2," is being released in October. Rhone says her primary focus at this early stage is to "develop and build the Motown roster. I see this as a very diverse label."
In her role as executive VP of Universal Records, Rhone will focus on synergies with other UMG operations. "What's exciting about the company is it has such a depth of creative assets," says Rhone. "The collaboration possibilities with the sister labels are limitless."
Kedar Massenburg exited as Motown president/CEO in July. Rhone, who had served as Elektra chairman/CEO since 1994, departed in March following that label's absorption into the Warner Music Group.
