Film studio 20th Century Fox today (Oct. 4) announced it has joined an international industry association backing the next-generation Blu-ray Disc DVD format.

Fox will join the board of the Blu-ray Disc Assn., which convened for the first time at a meeting in Tokyo. Companies supporting Blu-ray include Sony, Matsushita, Samsung, Philips, Sharp and Hitachi.

Sony says it plans to launch Blu-ray DVD players/recorders and software in late 2005. However, Fox says it will continue to work with backers of the rival HD DVD format, which include Toshiba and NEC.
