Mauro Del Rio has been appointed president of European Digital Media Assn. (EDiMA), the pan-European coalition which represents online music companies.

The appointment was announced today (Oct. 14) following the trade body's recent annual general meeting in London.

In his new role, Del Rio will serve a one-year term, retroactive from July 1, 2004. He succeeds Music Choice Europe CEO Margot Daly in the post.

In a statement, Del Rio says his objectives are to "encourage an EU policy framework that supports the efforts of EDiMA members, [and] to provide consumers with a vibrant and enriching digital media experience." During his tenure, Del Rio will remain based in Milan.

"Hopefully his appointment will take the association from strength to strength," EDiMA director Wes Himes tells Billboard.biz.

Del Rio is the founder and chairman of Italian digital service provider Buongiorno Vitaminic. The company formed in early 2003 when financially troubled EDiMA member Vitaminic -- an early European leader in digital music services -- merged with Italian interactive mobile-service provider Buongiorno.

EDiMA counts Amazon.com, Fnac.com, Wanadoo and RealNetworks Europe among its members.
