Universal Music (Malaysia) managing director Sandy Monteiro has been elected chairman of local labels body the Recording Industry of Malaysia (RIM) for a two-year term. Monteiro replaces Darren Choy, who recently resigned as MD of EMI Malaysia to join Adidas as its regional MD.

"My immediate priority is rebuilding relations with the relevant government ministries in dealing with piracy issues," Monteiro says of his new role. "The longer-term goal is to rehabilitate the ailing industry and give it a spark that's been missing for some time now."

As one of the architects of the RIM charts, he plans to resuscitate the local charts and organize more seminars and conferences.

Monteiro is no stranger to RIM. He served as the association's GM in 1998, before becoming executive director in 1999. During his tenure, he was actively involved in developing close relations with government officials in combating piracy.
