Robbie Williams' "Greatest Hits" is to be released on a memory card format compatible with cell phones and hand-held computers, thanks to a pact struck by EMI Music U.K. and British telecommunications retailer Carphone Warehouse.

The 19-track album with complementary video visuals will be compressed into a stamp-size card which fits into hand-held devices. Carphone Warehouse will exclusively sell the 128 MB card for £29.99 ($54) from its 600 British outlets starting next month. It is understood to be the first time a top artist has sold music via the portable memory card format.

According to Carphone Warehouse, the sound quality of the card will be comparable to that of the CD format. "We see pre-loaded music memory cards as the next step and part of a general consumer hunger for more mobile content," says Kevin Gillan, the retailer's director of group business development. Danny Van Emden, digital media director at EMI Music, says the memory card is “simply the next logical chapter” of its strategy to engage music fans with technology.

Both parties are in talks to deliver more pre-loaded memory cards this Christmas.

In other news, Williams has become the first artist to debut at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Ringtone Chart, since it launched May 31. Ringtone sales of Williams' "Radio" accounted for 17% of the top-20 sales for the Oct. 4-10 period, according to the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), the global trade organization which oversees the chart. Detailed sales figures were not reported.

Just eight ringtones have topped the chart, which recently switched from biweekly to weekly reporting. Accounting firm KPMG compiles the chart in association with the Official U.K. Charts Company.

"Radio," which is taken from Williams' "Greatest Hits" set, opened at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart for the week ending Oct. 16. The hits collection was released at traditional retail outlets yesterday (Oct. 18) in the United Kingdom, and is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the albums chart there.
