Mobile content provider BlingTones has launched a wireless-only "label" for the creation of custom ringtones.

Mobile content provider BlingTones has launched a wireless-only "label" for the creation of custom ringtones.

The company has signed up hip-hop producers to create original 30-second ringtones. Participating producers include Q-Tip, Rockwilder (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, DMX), Denuan Porter (50 Cent, Eminem), Salaam Remi (Nas) and Hi-Tek (Talib Kweli, Snoop Dogg). BlingTones will be the exclusive provider of the resulting content.

The market for ringtones based on existing songs may begin to slip once users learn how to create their own ringtone clips using phones that allow them to transfer digital music from their computers. As such, content created exclusively for mobile devices is expected to be the next big revenue-generator.

BlingTones says it is also creating exclusive urban-themed screen savers and wallpaper images to augment the ringtones. Additional plans include signing comedians to create other types of original content exclusively for mobile phones.

The company says it is advertising the service via radio and in urban and lifestyle magazines.

BlingTones currently counts wireless carriers such as Sprint, Cingular/ATTW, Nextel and Boost Mobile as partners.
