The frenzy by the major labels and/or their independent distribution subsidiaries to cut a deal with Victory Records is building to a crescendo. Victory leader Tony Brummel is said to have set Feb. 15 as the date he would like to have a deal in the bag, but sources familiar with the situation say matters have heated up this week.

Victory's current distribution deal with RED is up in August. Sources say all four majors have weighed in with some kind of offer; these are said to range from straight distribution deals with advances to ones that include an equity kicker, or a joint-venture purchase.

As to which of the suitors will land Victory, that remains to be seen, says one source familiar with the proceedings. "It's very close to happening," the individual says. "If the clock is ticking toward midnight, I'd say its 11:30."
