Sony BMG has named Gilbert Hetherwick as president of the classical division.

Hetherwick, who has been VP/GM of BMG Classics since 2003, succeeds former Sony Classical president Peter Gelb, who in October was named GM of New York's Metropolitan Opera.

Hetherwick will oversee all Sony BMG classical labels, including RCA Red Seal, Sony Classical, Odyssey, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Arte Nova. He reports to COO Michael Smellie in New York.

Before joining BMG, Hetherwick was GM of Angel Records/EMI Classics U.S. and held key roles at Sony Classical and Telarc Records.

Gelb, meanwhile, remains in discussions with Sony BMG regarding a short-term role prior to joining the Met on Aug. 1.
