Gala held Jan. 22 in Cannes.

Maroon5 and French vocalist Jenifer were the only multiple winners at the 2005 NRJ Music Awards, each taking home two awards. The ceremony was held last night (Jan. 22) at the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals, site of the annual MIDEM international music trade show.

Maroon5 was named international newcomer of the year and the band's "This Love" (Octone/J) was named international song of the year.

Local chanteuse Jenifer was named French female artist of the year and won French album of the year for "Le Passage" (Mercury).

U2's Bono accepted a special achievement award on behalf of the group. Scheduled to perform during the telecast, U2 canceled at the last moment due to an illness in guitarist the Edge's family. Nominated for international group/duo of the year, U2 joined Destiny's Child, the Black Eyed Peas and the pairing of Usher and Alicia Keys in the losers' column, as British boy band Blue was the surprise winner.

French radio station NRJ established the annual awards ceremony in 1999.
