Exec brings So So Def to Virgin.
Producer/artist/So So Def label head Jermaine Dupri has been tapped by Virgin Records to take over as president of the label's new Urban Music division. Dupri will be based in Atlanta and New York and report to Virgin chairman/CEO Matt Serletic and COO/GM Larry Mestel.
Under the deal, Dupri's So So Def label will join the Virgin stable, and he will also record as a solo act for Virgin and produce acts on Virgin and other EMI labels.
Dupri will work closely with Lionel Ridenour, Virgin's executive VP of Urban Music.
"By joining So So Def and Virgin, I plan to do for Virgin what Russell Simmons did 10 years ago, when he moved Def Jam to Island Records," Dupri says in a statement. "I will catapult Virgin into a young, hip label with chart-topping success in both R&B and rap music."
Dupri received two Grammy nominations this year for best R&B song, for his co-writing credits on Usher's hits "Burn" and "My Boo."
