VANCOUVER (The Hollywood Reporter) -- The British Columbia government will hike the film production tax credit from 11% to 18%, matching Ontario's new level, finance minister Colin Hansen said Jan. 19.

The move comes in the wake of intense pressure from local industry leaders to keep productions from moving east. Vancouver's film and television industry, which was dampened last year by a rising Canadian dollar, was further threatened by tax credit boosts in Ontario and Quebec, making those provinces more attractive as shooting locations.

The tax break for foreign production will be retroactive to Jan. 1 and will be applicable through March 2006.
