The Motion Picture Assn. of America has introduced an icon for DVD packages as part of its fight against piracy.

Called the "copy protection awareness" icon, the art was created for voluntary use on DVD packages. It is meant to remind consumers that DVDs are protected by copyright technology.

MPAA member companies will start using the icon this month. International releases will include it later in the year.

"This protection is in the ultimate interest of both movie companies and consumers, because uninhibited copying erodes the motion picture company's ability to earn a return on its investment; the protection of its investment is necessary to enable it to bring a wide variety of movies to market," MPAA president/CEO Dan Glickman says in a statement.
