Pat Alger has signed with Nashville-based Matt Lindsey Music for publishing representation. Alger, who was ASCAP's country songwriter of the year in 1992, has written such hits as Garth Brooks' "The Thunder Rolls" and "Unanswered Prayers," Hal Ketchum's "Small Town Saturday Night" and Trisha Yearwood's "Like We Never Had a Broken Heart." His songs have also been recorded by Kathy Mattea, Nanci Griffith, James Taylor, the Everly Brothers, Don Williams and Brenda Lee.
As part of the group Woodstock Mountains Revue, Alger recorded three albums for Rounder Records in the 1970s. He also recorded another album for Rounder as part of a duo with Artie Traum. In the 1990s, Alger released two solo albums on Sugar Hill Records and one on Liberty Records. In 2001 he co-produced and performed on the VFR Records release "In the Beginning: A Songwriters' Tribute To Garth Brooks." Last year he produced Compadre Records' "A Songwriters' Tribute To George Strait."
Matt Lindsey Music also represents the catalogs of Tony Arata, Steve Wariner, Lee Roy Parnell, Allen Reynolds, Randy Goodrum and Right Bank Music.
In other Nashville publishing news, songwriter and Grammy-winning producer Gary Nicholson has signed with Brewman Music & Entertainment for representation in the film and television markets. BME will work Nicholson's existing catalog for new licensing uses and seek out opportunities for him as a songwriter and producer in the film and television industries. The company has already placed several of his songs on the CMT special "Greatest Road Trips."
Nicholson won a Grammy Award for best contemporary blues album for producing Delbert McClinton's 2001 "Nothing Personal" set. He has also produced the Judds, T. Graham Brown and Columbia Records newcomer Jessi Alexander. As a songwriter, he was won more than two dozen ASCAP awards and his songs have been used in the films "Urban Cowboy," "Major League," "Message In a Bottle" and "Happy, Texas."
