Belgian act Novastar, fronted by Joost Zweegers, has signed a recording deal with EMI Music.

Novastar was previously with Warner Music but was released from the record company's roster as part of a restructuring in early 2004. The act's two Warner albums together have sold 200,000 units, according to a spokesman.

EMI Music Belgium managing director Erwin Goegebeur says the company will endeavor to raise Novastar's profile outside the Benelux region.

"Novastar has been working hard for many years now, writing songs, performing and building a strong fanbase in Benelux. I am looking forward to working with him and broadening his success across Europe and internationally," adds Jean-Francois Cecillon, chairman/CEO EMI Music Continental Europe, in a statement.

Zweegers was named best singer last month at the 12th Zamu Music Awards in Brussels.
