Australian acts won six of the 12 viewer-voted categories at the inaugural MTV Australia Video Music Awards, held today (March 3) at Sydney's Luna Park.

Australian acts won six of the 12 viewer-voted categories at the inaugural MTV Australia Video Music Awards, held today (March 3) at Sydney's Luna Park.

Sony BMG artist Delta Goodrem took the honor for best female artist and the Pepsi viewers choice award. U.S. acts Green Day and Black Eyed Peas also triumphed, with two honors each.

"Australian Idol" runner-up Shannon Noll was named best male artist, and Missy Higgins took the breakthrough artist award. Other home-grown winners included Guy Sebastian, who claimed the best pop video award for "Out With My Baby" (Sony BMG). The Dissociatives won video of the year for "Somewhere Down the Barrel" (EMI).

MTV televised the event live in Australia. The gala will air on MTV channels in the United States, Japan and Europe over the next 10 days, says Nigel Robbins, Sydney-based managing director of MTV Networks Australia. Excerpts will also be screened tomorrow on free-to-air networks Ten Network in Australia and C4 in Japan.
