LOS ANGELES -- Independent digital music distributor the Orchard has stepped up its mobile interests via a deal with entertainment publisher Dwango Wireless.

The Orchard has licensed its catalog of more than 375,000 recordings to Dwango, which will create original polyphonic and master-recording ringtones. Dwango says it will distribute this content to its wireless carrier partners nationwide.

The Orchard holds rights to material by such major acts as Ray Charles, Beck, Coldplay and Simply Red, as well as archived comedy routines and interviews from the likes of George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld.

Dwango sells its collection of more than 2,000 ringtones thorough the Rolling Stone Ringtones brand. The company says it will announce additional brand partnerships to extend its ringtone distribution into new content channels.
