LOS ANGELES -- Apple Computer has thrown its support behind the Blu-ray camp for next-generation DVD technology. The company has joined the Blu-ray Disc Assn.'s board of directors.

Apple joins Sony Corp., HP, Dell Panasonic, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney Pictures & Television, among others backing the Blu-ray format. As part of the group, Apple will help write Blu-ray specifications and will lend its marketing and promotional muscle behind the format.

Blu-ray is one of two competing formats for future high-capacity, high-definition DVDs. The other, HD-DVD, is backed by NEC and Toshiba.
