A spread of homegrown newcomers and veterans last night (March 15) garnered nominations for the 11th annual MTN South African Music Awards, which takes place April 15-16 at Sun City outside Johannesburg.

Singer Thandiswa earned nods in the best female artist, song, artist and best joint composition categories. Newcomer Simphiwe Dana, Kwaito stalwart Kabelo and hip-hop star Pitch Black Afro collected multiple nominations.

Brenda Fassie is posthumously nominated for best African pop.

Of the 46 categories, all but two will be decided by an industry panel. Public broadcaster SABC 1 will air the gala live.
