Hideaki Sekiguchi, who played bass with Japanese hardcore band Guitar Wolf under the name Billy, died March 31 after suffering a heart attack. He was 38.

The trio, signed to Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) affiliate Ki/oon Records, formed in 1987 and rapidly raised its profile at home and abroad with its hyper-energetic, over-the-top brand of punk rock.

In the United States, Guitar Wolf material has been released by various labels, including Goner, Matador and Narnack. The band has toured with acts such as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and made a splash at South By Southwest.

The future of Guitar Wolf was unknown at deadline. The band's management company, Tokyo-based SBT Music, says all scheduled concerts have been canceled.

Sekiguchi's memorial vigil will be held tomorrow evening (April 5) at Tokyo's Rinkai Funeral Hall. His funeral will take place the following day at the same location.
