Rudy Pérez was named songwriter of the year at the 13th annual El Premio ASCAP Awards, presented last night (April 5) at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. He had a total of 10 charting songs during the year, performed by a vast array of artists, from Jennifer Peña to Cristian Castro.

Pérez, also a producer, is signed as a songwriter with Universal Music Publishing, which tied with Sony/ATV Music Publishing for publisher of the year.

One of the main highlights of the evening was the presentation of the ASCAP Founders Award to singer/songwriter/actor and politician Ruben Blades. The honor is given to songwriters who "have made pioneering contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators." Past recipients include Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello.

Other winners included Marco Antonio Solís, whose song "Más Que Tu Amigo," published by Crisma Inc., was named Latin song of the year, and Del Castillo for independent group of the year award.

Awards were presented in the tropical, regional Mexican, urbano, rock and pop/ballad categories, as well as in the newly created television category, honoring the top-rated themes for a soap opera and for a TV variety program.

Awards are based on performance on the Billboard year-end charts.
