U.S. deal still up in the air.
Victory Records has announced that Universal Music Canada will be its exclusive distributor in Canada. The deal takes effect July 1. Chicago-based Victory had a previous seven-year arrangement with Koch Entertainment Canada.
In the United States, Victory is distributed by RED, a deal that is up for renewal this summer. The label is being courted by every major distributor.
"The right deal in the U.S. has yet to present itself," Victory founder Tony Brummell tells Billboard.biz. "I am not sure that any of the distribution companies owned by the majors are truly excited about empowering the independent community. Why would they be? If David has a cute girlfriend, Goliath will always go after her, even if he is out of Viagra."
Victory -- one of the hottest U.S. independent labels -- specializes in hardcore/punk. The label has five releases in Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart this week, led by Hawthorne Heights' "The Silence in Black and White," which has sold 241,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
