IMEAs celebrate technologies applicable to music.

The second annual Innovations in Music & Entertainment Awards are set for Sept. 14 during the Popkomm trade show in Berlin, and applications are now being accepted. The awards recognize individual and corporate leaders in bringing technology solutions to music artists and consumers.

The IMEAs are a joint project of Popkomm GmbH and Gerd Leonhard, CEO of Swiss-American digital-music and media advisory agency ThinkAndLink.

"The idea of IMEA is to connect investors, entrepreneurs and the media industry at a time when people are more optimistic about creating digital ventures," Leonhard tells Billboard.biz.

Last year's ceremony attracted more than 500 applications without much publicity, says Leonhard, adding that this year's event will be expanded into a more sophisticated all-day program.

The awards ceremony will feature five finalists in each of three categories: mobile music and entertainment, digital music and entertainment innovations and B2B solutions. Last year's winners were PlaylouderMSP, Kodime and Jukecharts.

Leonhard says the renewed enthusiasm of venture-capital investors in digital entertainment helped inspire the IMEA concept.

Applications must be sent via the Web site (www.popkommawards.com) by July 12. "We won't accept anything submitted any other way, including e-mails," Leonhard says.

Emmanuel Legrand, Billboard's London bureau chief and global editor of Billboard magazine, is joining the Popkomm-IMEA jury. His involvement follows the formation of a media partnership by Billboard Information Group and Billboard magazine with Popkomm, which is hosting its annual confab Sept 14-16 at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds.

"Billboard is thrilled to partner with Popkomm and IMEA, reflecting Billboard's commitment to its international audience," says Tamara Conniff, Billboard's co-executive editor.
