British record industry collecting society Phonographic Performance Ltd and sister organization Video Performance Ltd has appointed a new finance director and realigned some executive staff roles.

Mike Smith joins as finance director from British restaurants group Whitbread plc, where he most recently held the same title for its pub and diner brand Brewers Fayre.

In his new role, Smith replaces Tania Smythe, who has stepped down to spend more time with her family, PPL/VPL says in a statement.

"The finance role is absolutely key in the PPL/VPL environment and Mike has a wealth of commercial Finance experience at board level," comments the organization's chairman/CEO Fran Nevrkla, to whom Smith reports.

Separately, Janice Davies has been elevated from head to director of HR and Jill Drew is upped from head to director of public relations. Davies reports to Smith and Drew will continue to report to Nevrkla.

Sue Carty will continue in her role as director of customer relationship management, reporting directly to Nevrkla. Member Services, previously overseen by Carty, will transfer to the finance department under Smith.

PPL, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, has 3,000 record company members and 30,000 registered performers.

VPL was established in 1984 to administer the broadcast, public performance and dubbing rights in music videos. It currently has more than 800 member companies.
