Australia's Music Industry Piracy Investigations unit has appointed Michael Kerin as its new GM, effective May 23.

For the last two years, Sydney-based Kerin was head of fraud control and investigations at Australia's national airline Qantas. Prior to that, he was a detective sergeant with the New South Wales Police Service.

In his new role, Kerin succeeds Michael Speck, who departed as GM of the anti-piracy body in April to study criminology. Speck remains a consultant to MIPI, overseeing the record labels' battle in the Federal Court with Sydney-based Sharman Networks over the Kazaa peer-to-peer network.

MIPI is funded by trade body the Australian Recording Industry Assn.
