Industry veterans Gary Katz, Camille Barbone and Larry Stessel have formed New York-based WineDark Records. The label's CEO and primary owner is attorney Michael Powlen. The Fontana-distributed label will bow on Oct. 11 with "Next," the fifth album from Sevendust, who was formerly on TVT.

Sevendust has its own imprint, 7Bros Records through WineDark.

That deal is emblematic of how WineDark will conduct business, says Barbone, who is the label's GM. "We're giving them their own label where they can sign acts they believe in. Through our deals, they will have more control over their own lives." She adds that WineDark deals also include reversion of masters to the artists.

Other acts signed to the label include the Lloyd Dobbler Effect, Sarah Buras and London's the Rain Collective. Paul Burger, who formerly ran Sony U.K. is coordinating WineDark's U.K. efforts.

In an increasingly consolidated major label world, Barbone, who has worked at a number of labels including Columbia and Mercury, says WineDark can create opportunities for acts new and established. "Our five year plan it to develop a core of new talent as well as providing a home for some of the established artists who find themselves out of deals for various reasons," she says.

Additionally, WineDark will release a number of compilations starting in third quarter, 2006.
