More than 770 million DVDs shipped.

The Digital Entertainment Group reported today (July 26) that software shipments for the first half of the year were up 19% over 2004. More than 770 million DVDs shipped to retail between January and June.

On the hardware front, about 14 million DVD players were sold in the first half of 2005, which is a 6% increase over the same period last year.

The total number of DVD households is now 75 million. About 47% of DVD owners have more than one player. Further, DVD recorder shipments have more than doubled in the first half of the year compared to the first six months of 2004.

The DEG also says that according to figures compiled by the Consumer Electronics Association, portable DVD player sales are projected to grow 57% by year's end compared to 2004.

DEG's report was presented at VSDA's Home Entertainment conference, which runs through Thursday (July 28) at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
