The new statutory limits lower acceptable noise levels by five decibels. Employers will be required to take measures to limit staff exposure to excessive noise and provide adequate protection, such as ear plugs, to protect staff from hearing damage.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is co-hosting a forum on Oct. 11-12 at the Earls Court Conference Centre, London, to help companies implement the new rules.

The new rules follow the release of a report "Noise Overload," published last December, which concluded that noise levels at several clubs and bars in Britain reached 110 decibels, comparable to being within two feet of an aircraft taking off.

The study revealed that more than 170,000 Britons suffer from deafness, tinnitus and other hearing problems due to unsafe levels of music in the workplace.

"Noise Overload" was published by the Trade Union Congress and the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.
