List includes famous and local residents.

One of the most necessary local radio efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans is a silent one. A list of names of New Orleans metro area musicians whose safety and whereabouts have been determined has been posted by station volunteers at WWOZ-FM, the Big Easy's listener-supported jazz and heritage FM station.

The list includes 1,021 names so far, varying from the famous -- Harry Connick Jr., the Neville Brothers, the Marsalis family, Allen Toussaint and Fats Domino -- to local club and hotel acts; even including music scene veterans who have retired. Information on the musicians is from contacts with a variety of New Orleans music community sources.

Due to Katrina, the station signed off on August 27th at midnight.

On the whereabouts-to-be-determined list are local musicians Barry Cowsill, Narvin "Lil Kimball," Irvan Perez and Frank and Cindy Mayes.

WWOZ's New Orleans Internet broadcast is currently operating through the facilities of Jersey City, N.J.'s WFMU.
