Industry veteran was chief executive of Pressplay.
Mashboxx LLC, a company formed to establish a legal peer-to-peer music service, appointed yesterday (Sept. 22) Mike Bebel as its president and chief executive officer.
Music industry veteran Bebel will take on the role immediately, replacing Wayne Rosso, who will remain chairman of Mashboxx. The company is said to be in talks to acquire file-sharing service Grokster.
Bebel previously served as chief executive of Pressplay, a joint venture music service between Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group and Sony Corp's Sony Music.
Pressplay was purchased by software company Roxio and folded into the new Napster service. Bebel served as president and chief operating officer of the Napster operations before departing last year. Roxio completed the sale of its consumer software division in December 2004 and now operates under the Napster name.
