Jeffrey Kempler moves to role from Atari.

Jeffrey Kempler has been appointed to the newly created position of executive VP of business affairs and development for Virgin Records in the U.S. Kempler, who begins immediately, is based at Virgin's headquarters in New York and reports directly to Jason Flom, chairman/CEO of Virgin.

In this role, Kempler will oversee all of Virgin's business affairs and business development initiatives and activities. He will work closely with Larry Mestel, COO/GM of Virgin Records U.S., and Phil Wild, senior VP of business affairs for the label.

"Jeff is one of the brightest, most respected and well-liked people in the music industry," said Flom in a statement. "We're fortunate to have him join Virgin."

Kempler was most recently general counsel/senior VP of business and legal affairs for Atari, the interactive entertainment and game publisher. From 2000 to 2004, Kempler was senior VP of business and legal affairs for The Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ). While at IDJ, he also served as a management board member of the Roc-a-Fella Records joint venture. Before IDJ, Kempler spent eight years as an entertainment lawyer with Greenberg Traurig, LLP, based in Atlanta.
