Amaral, El Canto Del Loco among the winners.

A new generation of Spanish artists were celebrated at the 52nd Premios Ondas ceremony last night (Nov. 3).

El Canto Del Loco took the best artist or group prize. The Sony BMG act was at Barcelona's Liceu opera house to receive the award. At about the same time, the pop/rock outfit won the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best Spanish Artist across the Iberian peninsula in Lisbon.

Amaral won the best album award for "Pájaros En La Cabeza" (Virgin). The duo was also nominated on the same night for best spanish artist at the MTV Europe Awards, and for best pop duo or group at the Latin Grammys in Los Angeles. Like El Canto Del Loco, Amaral acknowledged their Spanish fan base by choosing to be at the Ondas event rather than in Lisbon or Los Angeles.

The Premios Ondas awards are organised by national radio network Cadena SER's Radio Barcelona. It has national and international categories in radio, television, cinema and music. The winners are voted for by a Spanish and international jury of professionals from the media field.

Other artists present to receive their awards were DRO Atlantic artist Diana Navarro (best new artist), Carlito Records artist Melendi (best song for "Caminando Por La Vida"), Universal artist Coti (best latin artist), and Atlantic-signed act The Corrs (special jury mention). Coldplay won the best international artist or group award, but were unable to attend as they were in Lisbon.

The Corrs, Il Divo, Diana Navarro, Coti, Pastora and Lucie Silvas with Antonio Orozco all performed live. The ceremony was broadcast on pay-TV Canal Plus.
