Media Rights Technologies has appointed veteran music industry executive Nic Garnett as chief strategist and director of international business development.

Media Rights Technologies has appointed veteran music industry executive Nic Garnett as chief strategist and director of international business development.

The Santa Cruz, Calif.-based software company said in a statement that in his new position, the British executive will "assist in MRT's licensing and advancement of technologies that enable consumers and content providers alike."

MRT CEO Hank Risan commented, "Nic's unique expertise in copyright law, enforcement, and evolution is a welcome asset to MRT. Furthermore, he brings exceptional experience and established connections, particularly in Asia and Europe, which will help to accelerate MRT's impact on a global scale."

An expert in rights management and protection, Garnett was director general/CEO of the IFPI from 1992-99. More recently, he was senior VP/in-house counsel at InterTrust Technologies in Santa Clara, Calif.

He also advised the U.K.'s Department of Trade and Industry in 2003 on its digital rights management program. He was a consultant specializing in intellectual property at London-based law firm the Simkins Partnership.
