Market expected to grow by another 7% in 2006.
The UK's 2005 year-end ringtone chart was topped by tunes from fictional cartoon characters and old pop favorites, not hit singles, according to data released from the Mobile Entertainment Forum.
The now-ubiquitous Crazy Frog ringtone surprised no-one by claiming the top spot, followed by "Tweet Tweet" by fellow cartoon character Sweety. Third on the chart was the 1971 hit "Amarillo," by Tony Christie, which had enjoyed a resurgence this year when it was re-released for the Comic Relief event. The remainder of the chart was dominated by more current hits, including Akron's "Lonely," "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, and the Pussycat Dolls' "Don’t Cha." The Gorillaz scored twice on the chart at 8 and 220, with "Feel Good Inc.," and "Dare," respectively.
Research group KPMG, which assisted the MEF in compiling the chart, expect the UK ringtone market will grow by another 7% in 2006.
