Ceremony set for April 7 in New York.

Dominican star Juan Luis Guerra will be honored as a BMI Icon during BMI’s 13th annual Latin Awards.

Guerra, a multi-Grammy winner, is widely recognized as the person who introduced the Dominican Republic’s traditional bachata to a broad, world audience. Guerra took the music a step beyond by incorporating a broad variety of rhythms without ever losing its essence.

A winner of Billboard’s Spirit of Hope Award, Guerra writes most of the songs he performs with his group 4-40, including "Ojala QUe Llueva Cafe" and "Las Avispas." He will be honored at the April 7 ceremony at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York.

The BMI Latin awards honor the songwriters and publishers of the most played BMI Latin songs on U.S. radio and television for the past year. This marks the first time the awards take place in New York.
