The Australian Recording Industry Assn. will relaunch its official sales charts through a "strategic alliance" with mobile phone company Motorola and DMG Radio Australia.

Following the new pact, the newly-named Motorola ARIA Charts show will be presented with a weekly countdown program from Sunday afternoon (Feb. 5) on broadcast partner DMG Radio Australia's Nova network.

Australia's official sales charts have been without a title sponsor since 1998, when terms concluded with soft drinks giant Coca-Cola.

As part of the relaunch, printed copies of the charts will be made available to consumers through record stores nationwide; ARIA had stopped distributing printed charts eight years ago. The new agreement also paves the way for Motorola to deliver the chart through its mobile devices.

ARIA will publish the charts online each Monday at www.ariacharts.com.au.

The new alliance also sees Motorola gain co-naming rights to the ARIA Awards and the ARIA No. 1 Chart Awards. A new radio show will launch this counting off the latest Top 40 chart positions.

Financial terms of the alliance were not revealed.

ARIA chair Denis Handlin told 300 music business and telecommunications executives at the sponsorship announcement in Sydney this week that ARIA planned to launch its long-awaited digital chart in March, which will integrate digital albums and singles tracks into the respective weekly sales charts.

"ARIA is committed to ensuring that the ARIA charts continue to be the one and only authoritative music chart in the country. This new alliance with both Motorola and Nova will assist us greatly in achieving this objective," Handlin said.

ARIA recently tweaked its chart cycle to maximize weekend sales. With effect from Jan. 16, the labels' body's chart week began tallying first sales from Saturday morning to the last sale on Friday evening. Prior to that, the chart cycle measured first sale Sunday to last sale Friday.

ARIA collates its sales data from 1,100 music stores across the country.
