Artists vying for record contract with Tommy Mottola.

NBC is launching a music competition series in the vein of American Idol, but making it available only online.

Called “StarTomorrow,” the Internet-only series, will consist of 100 artist and bands vying for a record contract with Tommy Mottola's Casablanca Records, under Universal Music Group.

Mottola, who is producing the series, will appear as a judge, along with other celebrity guest judges. However viewers will be the only voters counted in this contest. As an Internet series, viewers can watch the bands in any order they like, choosing the auditions they wish to watch. They can opt to hear the judges opinion, or simply vote on their own.

The first half of the competition will consist of auditions to advance to the finals. The second half will cover the finals, with fewer advancing to the next round each week.
