Sony Pictures Home Entertainment reported today (Feb. 7) that its first Blu-ray DVD titles will have a wholesale price of $23.45 for new releases and $17.95 for catalog titles. Consumers can expect to pay at least $30 per title.

No other studio has officially announced a pricing plan yet for upcoming next-generation releases, though it is expected that other Blu-ray titles and releases on the rival HD DVD format will be similar.

Sony’s pricing strategy is comparable to the first standard definition DVD releases at the time the format debuted in 1997.

Exact release dates for studios’ first Blu-ray slates are expected this week, and are likely to fall in late spring or early summer. HD DVD titles will begin to appear in stores in late March.
