DIRECTV to launch revamped channel March 1.

BET Networks is rebranding its BET Jazz channel as BET J. Concurrently, DIRECTV will launch the revamped channel on March 1.

BET J will be located at Channel 330 on DIRECTV’s Total Choice Plus tier. According to BET, the addition of the satellite carrier—coupled with existing distributors Charter Communications, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable—brings the BET J subscriber base to 23 million homes.

Advertising and marketing BET J via the slogan “Cool Like That,” BET Networks is also instituting a slate of new programs to reflect BET J’s presentation of a broader cross section of African-American culture. The new programs include “Soul Sessions,” a mix of old school/new school soul music; “Influences,” chats with contemporary soul and R&B artists about traditional jazz’s influence on their music; “My Two Cents,” a topical talk show integrating classic soul/R&B videos; “The Best Shorts: A BET J Showcase,” which focuses on short films; and “Video Soul Gold,” a vintage video program reprising former BET mainstay “Video Soul” and featuring original host Donnie Simpson.
