Initial product coming from Sony, Lionsgate.

The first Blu-ray DVDs will debut in stores May 23.

Eight titles from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment —“50 First Dates,” “The Fifth Element,” “Hitch,” “House of Flying Daggers,” “A Knight’s Tale,” “The Last Waltz” (MGM), “Resident Evil Apocalypse” and “XXX”—and five titles from Lionsgate—“Crash,” “Lord of War,” “The Punisher,” “Saw” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”—will be released in Blu-ray’s first wave.

Lionsgate says that its titles will carry a suggested retail price of $29.99 or $39.99. Sony has not released price information.

These software titles will be released to coincide with the first Blu-ray players from Pioneer and Samsung.

Sony’s “Underworld Evolution” will be the first new release Blu-ray title when it bows in early summer. It will also be released day-and-date with a standard definition DVD version.

Both Sony and Lionsgate will also be releasing a second wave of catalog titles on Blu-ray in June.

The first titles on rival next generation format HD DVD will be available March 28.
