New joint venture channel to launch March 21.
MTV will return to Canadian television March 21 via a joint venture with Canadian broadcaster CTV Inc. The channel will be offered on basic cable in 4.4 million households and will replace CTV's talktv. MTV Canada will create original programming for numerous CTV platforms and MTV's international outlets.
The MTV brand disappeared from Canadian airways following the acquisition of Calgary-based Craig Media in Dec. 2004 by CHUM Ltd. MTV Networks International then exercised its right in May to end its agreement with CHUM. As a result both MTV and MTV2, which launched in 2001, ceased to air in Canada in June. CHUM then launched Razer and PunchMuch in the channel positions previously occupied by MTV and MTV2.
CHUM also operates music channels MuchMoreMusic, MuchLoud, MuchVibe, MuchMoreRetro, PunchMuch as well as the youth lifestyle channel Razer.
